Walking out in the middle of class with a “stank” face…it happens to everyone.
There are many reasons, someone would walk out of your class, don’t take it personal, because it is not.
Now if you actually find out they don’t like you for whatever reason then we have an issue that needs to be resolved quickly.
Reasons people walk out:
“I hate that song”, “your choreography is too difficult”, “I cant see you”, “don’t look at me in embarrassed”, “please don’t put me on stage”, “your music is too loud” “you don’t cue, I cant follow you”, “its hot in here”, etc., etc., etc.
There will always be a reason for someone to walk out of class.
The question is how do you keep them in and not let them walk out.
They will come back, most of the times its something surrounding them that is making them feel that way. They started class already defeated.
Always come in the door happy, with a big smile, say hi to every single one of your students get to know them, try to remember some of their names, they will appreciate it. Make sure you ask if anyone has any injuries and if there are any show them what can be modified. Besides having a good playlist you do need positive music, music with a feeling or message. Sometimes they are not just dancing they are also singing to the songs. The lyrics should have a good positive message or just a feel good vibe. Introduce yourself before you start class give your name and let them know what was the inspiration for todays playlist. Smile, your smile is contagious, when you see people are too focused get their attention and get them to smile. Make sure people are spread out and have enough space, make sure everyone has a towel, maybe bring a stack of towels in before class. Remind people to drink water and stay hydrated, if they feel comfortable bring them on stage with you. I know you want to hear the music loud and pumping because it motivates you but sometimes playing it to loud and not being in the same place as your students , you cant hear how loud it is from there position. So make sure you are aware of the loudness of your music.
Finally, I like to say thank you to everyone, I know we are sweaty and discussing but a hand shake or a hug is not bad, some of my students love it. I begin with a cool down and before the end of the cool down I dim the lights and repeat a pattern of 8 4 times very slow after the first time they repeat I’m off the stage and keep talking them through it, as I observe and walk towards the exit. We finish up say our goodbyes remind them of the next class and every single student that comes by gets a thank you from me and a reminder for the next class with a hug or a shake.
The connection with your students is so important, make them feel great at all times. Some people will still walk out of your class they always do, but knowing that you are doing your best and someone is just not having a great day isn’t your fault, you can only do the best possible and that’s what counts, remember you have many more students in class that are counting on to give them a fun, exciting and efficient workout.
